Mental filters are the internal lenses through which people interpret life. Everybody has filters. The problem is not having a filter — the problem is when the filter becomes distorted by fear, trauma, pain, rejection, insecurity, bitterness, or disappointment.
In Matthew 14, the disciples are not looking at a fake Jesus. Jesus is really there. The problem is their fear has become the filter through which they interpret what they see. So instead of calling Him Savior, they call Him a ghost.
That’s what mental filters do.
Mental filters shape perception.
Perception shapes interpretation.
Interpretation shapes reaction.
In other words, people do not always respond to reality itself; they respond to the version of reality their filter creates.
I’ve created a chart to help you identify the possible filters you may be looking through when making decisions.
